"Congratulations to all the wonderful people who work behind the scenes to make the performances all appear effortless… and to the teachers who make it enjoyable for the kids to want to keep coming back each week. I am also impressed by the communication I receive about what is going on and how things work, it makes choosing to send my daughter to YABC an easy decision."

ABOUT MUSICAL THEATRE CLASS

The Young Australian Broadway Chorus has been inspiring and challenging Melbourne’s young performers since 1999. YABC currently offers musical theatre courses to young people aged 8 – 18 years in 17 venues across Melbourne.

Our young performers work with a music director, dance director and drama director to improve technique, build confidence and increase self-esteem while enjoying the fun of working as part of a team.

Skills developed throughout the semester are showcased on stage in performances at the National Theatre in St Kilda.

Students may join at any age from the year they turn eight, and may progress through the hierarchy of the organisation based on their age and ability.

ABOUT DANCE FOR BOYS

We have been teaching boys to dance for the past 15 years as part of the YABC's musical theatre programme. We recognise that boys develop movement skills at varying rates and are motivated to dance for different reasons from girls.

The Australian Boys Dance Academy provides a safe, boys-only zone for them to progress at their own pace through our specially tailored courses.

Our classes are great for:

  • boys with imagination, creativity and who like a challenge
  • sporty kids who want to boost their coordination, agility, flexibility and spatial awareness
  • actors who want that extra skill base
  • and boys who just want to dance!

Our teachers have worked extensively as dancers, choreographers and actors in film, television and musical theatre across Australia and internationally.

ABOUT DRAMA CLASS

The Victorian Youth Theatre has been inspiring and challenging Melbourne’s young performers for over 30 years. VYT currently offers weekly drama courses to young people aged 8 – 18 years in 14 venues across Melbourne.

Our unique programme combines elements of two key areas:

  • ‘Creative drama’ uses a variety of activities to develop spontaneity, imagination, focus, confidence, verbal, physical
  • ‘Stagecraft drama’ places an emphasis on vocal projection and clarity, acting techniques, text as the basis for characterisation, and physical staging.

Students may join at any age from the year they turn eight, and may progress through the hierarchy of the organisation based on their age and ability.

We also offer our new 1 hour pre-school Foundation program for 4 & 5 year olds at selected locations across Melbourne!

Studies have shown that creative play helps foster confidence, creativity and social and personal development.

"The arts provide a valuable avenue for experiencing our creativity and the wider benefits of arts engagement are well documented. At a personal level they include greater self confidence, an active imagination, a sense of belonging, empowerment, and improved wellbeing and educational performance." Creative Connections Report.

Twice each year the students take to the stage in fully costumed and themed performances in a professional theatre at the Union Theatre, Parkville.

"We just wanted to pass on our thanks and heartfelt congratulations on the wonderful concert we attended. Our son...participated in his first concert last night after joining this year. The children were so fantastic on stage, it is a credit to the incredible team of teachers you have to see what they performed after such a short time with Beginners on Stage."

– Beginners OnStage Parent

"Absolutely loved the show. The best part was seeing so many boys so happy on stage and loving busting their moves. I was moved to tears as sometimes it's hard for them to feel comfortable dancing but they really outdid themselves and I just loved the joy they all radiated in such a supportive environment."
